About Us

Transparency

We believe that scientific academia should be accessible by anyone who is willing to learn. Academic publications are far too often obscured from the general public—The Scientific Student looks to change that.

Our story

Founded in 2015 by Carolyn Im, The Scientific Student is a completely free online student-led magazine and blog dedicated to providing a platform for students of all ages to showcase their research, opinions, and takes on current scientific news. In the age of social media, The Scientific Student works to bridge the gap between full-fledged academic publications and popular culture news sources by offering new student perspectives into the vast world of science.

The goal of The Scientific Student is to ultimately increase student involvement of all ages  in the scientific community, and encourage skills such as collaboration and effective communication. Carolyn and her team managed The Scientific Student from 2015-2019, after which leadership transitioned to Kamal Narayanan and his team, who have made it their mission to expand the reach of the site by increasing accessibility and practicing world-class journalism.
